Responding to Climate change

The GEF/SGP has introduced different forms of renewable energy to rural communities. Under the programme different forms of solar energy for lighting, heating and drying has been introduced to rural communities to reduce demand for conventional fuels.

The GEF-SGP is promoting improved efficiency woodstoves among household, commercial and industrial users of woodfuel in the dry savanna areas to minimize the rate of tree harvesting.,
Under the Climate Change project, The GEF–SGP has pioneered the production of bio-diesels from jatropha seeds to encourage a shift from diesel to bio-fuel.

The programme has piloted school transport centralization to reduce the number of vehicles being used to carry children to schools in the Accra metropolis. These efforts if up-scalled can reduce the emissions of CO2 and thereby mitigate climate change.

The GEF/SGP in conjunction with the Technology Consultancy Centre has improved on the Ahibenso coal pot. This technology bring to two the improved charcoal stoves in Ghana. An aggressive penetration strategy will have to be adopted to encourage consumers to patronage the energy efficient stoves.
