Operational Programmes
1.0 COUNTRY PROGRAMME OVERVIEW1.1 BackgroundThe Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programme (GEF/SGP) in Ghana was launched in 1992 to provide support for community-level initiatives that contribute to protecting the global environment in three main focal areas namely, conserving biological diversity, mitigating the threat of global climate change, protecting international waters from pollution, ozone layer depletion and management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP). The programme also deals with land degradation (primarily desertification and deforestation) as they relate to the focal areas. The programme, since its inception in 1992, has been implemented in three phases - pilot, Operational I and Operational II. The pilot phase (1992-95), focused on: (1) Establishing an efficient, decentralized and transparent system for providing small grant support to non-governmental Organization (NGOs) and Community-based Organizations (CBOs) and (2) Providing funding for a wide range of pilot activities to test and
demonstrate community-level activities that can provide global benefits
